MATH TIPS FOR PARENTS/STUDENTS

1. Engage your child in the planning of travel trips when calculating mileage or distance.

2. Play conversion games in the kitchen with can good items such as the number of ounces, or how many pounds, etc.

3. Practice rounding prices of items to the nearest whole dollar amount.

4. Practice using percentages by calculating the percentage off regular priced item.

5. Practice math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) daily.

6. Allow child to practice his or her fractions by measuring proper fractional amounts in recipes or during preparation of meals.

7. Play classical music for your child during homework or study time. Classical music stimulates the brain.

8. View and discuss the list of Common Core State Standards in Mathematics by grade level under the “Tutorials/Tips”  heading on this site.

9. Please make it mandatory for your child to show his or her work when doing math assignments. It is important for students to be able to justify (explain) their thinking in mathematics.

10. Discuss math vocabulary being taught at school and encourage your child to use such vocabulary when discussing homework.
